Round 1
The two warriors approach the middle of the ring and start circling tentatively feeling each other out, refusing to engage. The fighters each attempt attacks from a distance, missing due to the tentative natures. Reyes scores first with a glancing left hook. Reyes connects with a leg kick and continues his back peddle dance. The crowd boos.  Reyes connects with another leg kick. Payan delivers a kick to the mid section and Reyes counters with a leg tackle. Payan clearly does not want to be on the ground and quickly steps up as Reyes goes into a backside defense. Payan takes a few leg kicks but backs off and allows Reyes to his feet. The inactivity continues as both fighters refuse to engage. Payan lunges and misses with a combination of punches. Payan lunges again with punches to the head and Reyes ducks the shots for a leg takedown. Reyes comes up to the body for a lock and rolls Payan to his back, assuming full mount position. Payan has a strong defensive guard minimizing Reyes ability to attack.  Reyes pulls out a full mount position to stand up allowing Payan to get back to his feet. The fighters have a wild exchange of blows as Reyes takes Payan down to the mat along the cage wall as the bell rings.

Neither fighter really deserves the round, but we have to give it to somebody. Reyes takes the round.

Round 2

The fighters come out dancing again, refusing to engage. Payan throws a wild right as Reyes circles out.  Payan connects with a combination to Reyes' head. Payan lunges with a shot to the head and Reyes goes under for the leg takedown. Reyes pins Payan along the cage wall, but Payan works his way off, escapes and the fighters are back on their feet. Reyes connects with a kick to the face and back peddles once again. Within seconds, Reyes lands a stunning spinning back fist to the head of Payan that rocks him hard and knocks him out. The referee quickly covers Payan to end the fight.

At the end of the second round Ferguson staggered Quintero and then swung big, missing and slipping to the canvas. “I had my opportunities to knock him out but I wanted to prove to people that I could box,” Quintero said. “It was a very tough fight but none of his punches really hurt me. I give myself a nine out of 10. I could have worked harder training for this fight.”

The customary hustle and bustle of the CREA Gym, located in the heart of Tijuana, Mexico, is nonexistent as the usually packed and busy space is near empty.

“It’s another victim of the swine flu scare,” says Romulo Quirarte Jr. who, with his brother, Bobby, and father, Romulo, run the famed training center.
